OK, sorry, more Land Shark cyclocross build questions.

Right now, I have a high rise quill that has been drilled through the center to hold and anchor the front centerpull cable. I'd like to go with a lower rise quill. I can't use one of the more typical centerpull brackets that fit in the headset because the Mavic headset won't accomadate one.

So, are there centerpull anchors that can be attached to a quill?

Another option would be to go with a threaded stem adapter, a two bolt stem, and drill a hole through the stem.

All ideas welcome.

I would absolutely not drill through a threadless stem in the fashion you're suggesting. There's no need anyways, you can get a "fork mounted" canti stop. Specialized makes one. It attaches to the front of the fork.



Are you aboslutely sure you cannot fit one of these in the headset? All you have to have is even just one spacer for example this to fit:

The problem is that the top of the Mavic headset is a cup that screws down and overlaps the entire unit.

Am I correct that the unit you describe requires a drilled fork, which this fork is not.

It unfortunately does. You have two options then

1) Replace the headset - a cheap tange unit is $12.
2) Find a quill that has a rise you want and that is drilled for a stop

or maybe someone else on this forum has a better suggestion.

If you really are out of options, you might be able to mount one of these


on the stem, just hang it from the pinch bolt and bend it into place. I can't imagine this is your best option though

Or if the quill happens to be 28.6mm or 31.8mm in diameter, with a round cross-section, you could clamp a front-derailleur adapter around the quill, then hang that gizmo from the FD bolt hole.



Been there, done that with an old Control Tech stem and an Onza Mongo II headset that had a one-piece top.

If your new stem of choice has a cross section that is pretty close to the one you replaced what about drilling a set of two holes to put the new cable stop in the new stem?

I suppose the decision on doing this would need to be tempered by how hard you push on the bars and how closely their cross section matches the old cable stop style stem.

My old Kona Lava Dome (circa 1994) has a hanger built into the bottom side of the stem. Try searching some classified (ie ebay) for some older quill stems.

Yet another option: get V-brakes and some V-brake-compatible road levers. Or if you're using brifters, get V-brakes and Travel Agents.

You could use that fork mounted hanger and bolt it to a brake booster that mounts to the canti studs similar to this setup (though a set of v-brakes and a travel agent would likely cost about the same and be much easier to adjust)

that is precisely the item his headset is preventing, he cant use the spacer style headset hanger because his headset is not meant for such a devise. Id go with a v-brake and scrap the canti brake idea. Or get a new headset-they have them with built in hangers now.

Are you using a solid forged alloy quill like the ones on older road bikes? If so then you will be fine to drill out a hole wide enough for the brake cable to run through without disturbing the structural integrity of the stem.
Just use the smallest bit you can get away with for the hole that is all the way through, drill through the thickest part of the stem you can. Find a housing stop piece from an old road bike(the part that keeps the housing from going into the lever) and drill a hole just big enough for the small end to seat nicely on the stem-should only need to go 2-3mm deep or so. This should solve the problem with no structure issues.

If you want to use an old TIG welded MTB type quill or an investment cast alloy stem I would recommend against this idea.

if you're going to go modifying a stem, weld on a pulley and a stop to the bottom. make it into one of these

unfortunately that one needs a hole in the fork crown. Thread's gone on long enough that we start forgetting the OP's particular problems

Thanks all. I have decided to go with a Velo Orange cable hanger and shim to attach the hanger above the headset on the quill.
