Innovative solutions for storing bike
 

I'm not sure where the best place to post this is, so I'll try here.

I'm trying to figure out how to store my bike at a new place I'm living.

We have a small garden shed which I can use, except it's pretty fiddly to fit the bike in and it also leaks...not the most ideal place.

We do have an undercover patio area that I could store it, but it's not actually locked away anywhere there, it'd just be leaning up against the house. It has got a roof there, but no walls so it's still out in the air. Again, not ideal.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I could store my bike?

I was thinking of looking for some large box that I could lock it in under the patio area, but can't think of anything myself.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

A lot of it depends on your climate and area. Snow belt? Weather? Tropics? Rural? In the middle of the city?

You might want to look at something like a telescope cover - I use one with my scope, and it protects it fine in all sorts of weather: http://www.astronomics.com/main/Tele...ope-Covers.htm for one vendor, among many. Perhaps combining that with the shed might be sufficient.

Just bring it in the house.

If under the house, Try a motorcycle cover. They are much more durable than bicycle covers.
I suggest anything that would keep it OFF the ground, such as a wall mount to your home. Or a pole with the mount on it from ground up to your deck or hooks from the deck, even rope.

Try to keep the bike well lubed and inflate tires before you ride as the cold air will make them go flat faster.

If you have one free wall in your new place , a 2x4x whatever the ceiling height is+ two 1"x 6" square pieces and a $9.95 Y style hanger from Home Depot will afford you a free standing place to hang one or two bikes )up off the floor)
(nail the 1x6x6 to each end of the 2x4. Press fit against ceiling and floor, screw the Y bracket to the 2x4 and hang bike via top tube.

It's a sub-tropical climate I live in.

The bike is a fairly expensive mountain bike hence I want to look after it.

These bike/motorbike covers look like a potential solution. Can anyone recommend any brands? Any problems with getting a motorbike cover to fit a bike?

The issue with a motorcycle cover will be what to do with the excess that hangs down onto the floor or deck. It'll be a big sloppy looking thing. They are also around $50 to $60 if that matters. Brand won't matter but do try to get one that has a couple of vents along the top. But it would do a good job of keeping your bike protected from any rain splashing around. If it's frequenty wet or humid in your area though do keep an eye on the bike for signs of rust on the chain and on the ends of various bolts. A cover can sometimes hold IN unwanted moisture as well as keep it out the other part of the time. A cover that has vents in the top that are held open with sewn in wire or plastic tensioners is best for this reason. It'll help encourage airflow. But really if the cover is large enough that the area you'd be locking the bike at doesn't get an rain splash of significance I don't think I'd bother with a cover. However if rain regularly blows in and wets down the entire deck area then a cover is a great idea.

Out on a deck I'd be more worried about security. But if it's away where wandering eyes can't see it that'll help a huge amount. I'd still set up a sturdy locking system though.

+1 you should at least lock your wheels to your frame if theirs no other option
