I know it sounds heretical but I want to put a kickstand on my bike - Trek 8500.

I do a lot of trail riding over here in Germany and it is nice to be able to stand the bike up rather than throw it on the ground.

Any recommendations for something that will work with disc brakes?

I know, it makes perfect sense to me. I don't know why people are so against kickstands. I never liked to throw my bike on the ground either, and often there isn't anything to lean it against. A good rear mounted kickstand doesn't rattle or anything and adds minimal weight.

Something like this may work depending on the shape of your frame and chainstays. There are few variations of that kickstand. Select "Choose Size/Color" to see them. I'm sure they have some equivalent in Europe.

I have this one but it's a bit bulky, the mount plates are thick so I had some issues with rear disc rotor clearance. I cut out the inside plate with a Dremmel to make it fit. That was before I found those on Jenson site, I would have gotten one of those instead.

Don't throw it on the ground, just lay it down gently. Problem solved. When actually mountain biking, kickstands are superfluous and can be dangerous (and definitely heretical). If you're using your mountain bike for MUP riding or commuting or something I suppose they're fine.

Not Heretical - the doctrine of the Church of the Rotating Mass teaches us that it is better to ride with a kickstand then to not ride without.

They can be a nusciance, though - especially on very rough terrain. Maybe dangerous, but only on very very rough and steep terrain. I'd hate to have my eye poked out because I tried to do a backflip on a bike with a kickstand.

There is always something to lean your bike against, unless you are riding int he Sahara desert. You can stabilize your bike by tightening a toe-strap around the front brake lever.

Look for a shop that sells Specialized bicycles and see if they have any accessories. I purchased a kickstand for my brother once that weighs next to nothing. Rear mount, black, not too expensive. This must have been about five or six years ago.

I got the rear stand for my MTB (no discs) for $10 at Dick's Sporting Goods and I like it a lot. I think I'll get one for my commuter which has a really lame stand.
