missing chainring bolt
I got a little carried away today when reassembling my crank today and broke a chainring bolt from my 5 bolt double crank.
I have no way to get to the bike shop without my bike, so would I be alright if I ride 5 miles missing a bolt from my crank? |
Sure. Just take it easy.

Lower the seat and just schluff your way there!

I had a bicycle that was missing a chain ring bolt and it took me 2 years to realize it. You'll be fine without one bolt.

Did you know you can drive around with only 3/4 or 4/5 bolts holding the wheels on your car as a temporary measure until you get to a service station? same deal with chainring bolts. |
I rode with 2/5 bolts for several miles, no problem.

It might be ok temporarily and with gentle use, but it's just asking for trouble in the long term.

I have broken chainring bolts and lost a wheel off my car once doing just that! Fortunately nobody was killed either time. Losing the car wheel was far more spectacular.

I too have ridden a bike with one of the chainring bolts missing for months without noticing. Take it easy and you'll be fine.

Now, that's sketchy... |
I've bent a chain-ring that had a couple of bolts loosen and one fell off. I was cranking up a steep hill. Take it easy and get a replacement ASAP.
