crank puller stuck on arm

1 Attachment(s)
Hi, i recently bought new cranks and wanted to change my old ones but after taking off one arm the crank puller is stuck on the arm. I had taken the arm to a Sports Chalet and the employee tried helping me remove the crank puller put had no success. I am out of options and need advice/help on how to remove the crank puller. I uploaded some pictures as well. If you can help please email me at akong24680@yahoo.com
Thanks xD

spray some penetrating oil on the threads like kroil, pb blaster or even wd 40 is thats all you got. clamp the crank in padded vice and unscrew.

1. apply penetrating oil. Wait a day and try again. 2. Place in boiling water for 5 minutes and then try to unscrew when hot.

3.Take propane torch to the aluminum arm. Try to uncsrew. Of course this will ruin the crank arm by annealing the forging. Do not use after doing this. 4.Take a hack saw and cut into the side of the crank, parallel to the axis of the crank puller. Make a couple of cuts almost to the edge of the threads, 180 degrees apart. Put puller in a vise and try to unscrew. 5.Use a hammer and chisel to split the end off by driving the chisel into the cuts. if 1 or 2 works then you can reuse the crank. Any of the other attempts will destroy the crank and possibly the tool..

galling, its a *****.

at this point, your only option is to soak the threads in penetrating oil, let it sit for a while and use gobs of force. hopefully you have access to a sturdy bench vise, clamp down either :

A) the arm and use the biggest adjustable wrench you can find on the puller or

B) put the puller in the vise and get a cheater pipe over the crank arm and PUSH.

good luck.

in the future : apply grease to anything that threads together on your bicycle before threading.

Here's where the OP stands

1) Tool worth = $10 or less
2) Crankarm worth = $20 or less

Big whoop if you can't get them apart. Destroying the crank to save the puller is just a waste of labour.

stick the tool in a vise and turn the crankarm counterclockwise. something should give.

And if that doesn't work, slip a piece of pipe over the arm to increase the leverage.

i had already tried oiling it and using wd4. brute force is out of the question as well

Really? If so, deep-six it and buy a new one.

Metzinger 03-26-10 04:52 AM

Brute force shouldn't be out of the question in this case.
What could happen? Cracked crank end? More likely a de-threaded crankarm.
That just means it will be trickier getting it off next time you do BB work.
Put a big pipe on the end of that wrench and give 'er. Watch a Chuck Norris movie first if you need to.

Reusing a crankarm with destroyed removal threads, especially when arm replacemenet MSRP is $10-$20 is idiotic. Seriously, think about what you're posting.

bbgobie 03-26-10 07:34 AM

Lesson for next time?
Grease threads
Why is it on so tight?

My guess is that he cross-threaded the puller into the arm. Steel on aluminum shouldn't gall but it will get good and tight when crossthreaded. I'm not sure why the OP is *****-footing around backing the puller out of the arm. It will come out though the crank arm threads are likely toast. The puller, being much harder, should be ok. As has been said, put it in a vice and go to town.

Nice software.

You know the filters operate very simply on pattern matching right. That's what sh1t like *** can get through. **** regex right?

Right, I just thought a relatively benign word like pu$sy would go through. I was wrong, and I'm kinda grumpy today so I complained out loud about it.

Dirty words are ****ing dangerous and violate the pure, innocent landscape that is the internet.

(This is my least favorite thing about bikeforums.net)

Work with me on this one.
Assuming the threads are gone. You can:
a: throw out crank immediately
b: use the crank (potentially for the life of the BB) after which time you can use a claw type puller, or (worst case scenario) free the crankarm destructively from the spindle using a hacksaw or grinder, then throw out the crankarm

One involves going shopping today, the other (maybe) years from now. Tough call.
I honestly think you prefer to disagree with me than to logic things through.

Why is brute force out of the question?
