The problem I have is I can't get my rear XT mech to shift into 1st gear (easiest) and actually above 4th gear. On my XT shifter pod it states I'm in 1st when I'm actually in 4th and thus won't go any higher. Meaning also when I'm in 9th gear (hardest) the shifter pod shows I am 6th. Not sure if that made a load of sense.
I've tried adjusting the high and low screws and also the cable tension but to no avail. Any ideas? Oh by the way, this bike is all brand new - I think something must of occured during transit to me :( Thanks. bike in question - http://www.pinkbike.com/modules/phot...w&image=282840 |
Sounds like your limit screws are (forgive the pun) screwed up.
Do this: 1) take a 5mm allen wrench and undo the cable fixing nut at the rear derailleur. 2) Turn the barrel adjuster at the derailleur and the shifter all the way in, then back out 1 full turn. 3) pedal the bike (w/o shift cable attached). 4) chain should drop to the smallest cog (biggest if low normal). 5) if not, unscrew the limit screw on the rear derailleur until it does. 6) with the shift cable still unattached, and while pedaling, grab the derailleur and force it to the biggest cog (smallest if low normal) You should be able to force the derailleur all the way over. If it stops, again, unscrew the OTHER limit screw until you can. 7) grab the shifter cable and pull tight and shift into the lowest gear. 8) affix the shifter cable to the rear derailleur and tighten the cable fixing nut. 9) while pedaling, shift into 2nd gear. Keep pedaling. Turn the barrel adjuster at the rear derailleur out until the chain wants to start "climbing" into the third gear. Turn the barrel adjuster back in so, the chain no longer makes noises trying to "climb" into the third cog. This CENTERS your derailleur to correspond the the detents on the shifter. (i.e. so one click on the shifter equals one cog shift) 10) go for a test ride. Use the barrel adjuster to fine tune shifting performance. L8R |
hi - thanks for the reply. Excuse my ignorance - upto stage 7 all going dandy, when you say shift into the lowest gear is that the biggest cog or smallest?

well if you mean lowest then after I've tightened the cable again and I start pedaling it will go down the second to biggest cog.
Then If i try to shift down using the shifter it will make a lot of noise and jump right down 3-4 gears. EDIT: well I adjusted the hi and low screws again after i did what you said and now it appears I can go up and down the gears quite nicely except for going into the biggest chainring of which it will go back down to the second biggest. Also it seems a bit noisy than it should do when changing gears. EDIT AGAIN: well i seem to now be able to shift fine up into the high cogs but I can only shift about 3 cogs down. The opposite is now happening. I've obviously over done something buy am not sure what. |
When you released the cable, did the derailleur automatically return to the largest cog (lowest gear) or the smallest cog (hardest gear)?

smallest cog.
I seem to be able to shift through the gears but they aren't at all smooth in the middle cogs. |
