Ultegra 6503 FD with 52/40/28 chainrings

Can anyone tell me if this will work? I am upgrading an older centurion to triple for my wife. The plan is to run a ultegra 6503 front and rear derailleurs, Sugino VP triple cranks with 52/40/28 chainrings, and either an 8 speed cassette or 7 speed freewheel. I haven't decided on that last part.

Since I started acquiring parts I have learned that these triple FD's are not that flexible, and will only work with certain combinations.

So I went to the shimano site to see what the specifications are for the 6503 FD, and they are not there. I am talking about this site.

https://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs...=1269551146772

They seem to have specs for every recent component except the 6503 FD. So I don't know what the maximum tooth difference or minimum large/intermediate difference is for that FD.

I do know that the standard 6503 cranks came with 52/42/30 cranks, so I am guessing that that minimum large/intermediate difference is at most 10. This means I think I am probably ok with the 52/40 large/intermediate on this crank.

But I don't know if the 6503 FD will work 52-28 overall tooth difference. Does anyone know?

Now I also have a dura ace 7703 FD. The specs are there for that one-- but it lists a 14 tooth minimum large/intermediate difference and a 23 tooth total difference. So I don't think that will work with my 12 tooth large/intermediate difference.

Let me know what you think. I really don't have any experience with this, I only know what I have read.

52-40 should be fine ; the total 24 tooth drop might be a bit much but I bet you could get it to work. If you have all the components already, give it a shot; if the shifting isn't up to snuff, you could always swap in different size small ring later. What is BCD of the crankset, by the way?

If you are using friction shifting for the FD I think you have a better chance. That's not to say it will not work with indexing, it very well may.

I'm running a 52/42/28 triple on my commuter using a 105 5503 triple front derailler and Ultegra 6500 STIs. Occasionally the shift up from the 28 to the 42 is a bit slow but other than that, it shifts fine. I would think that your 52/40/28 would shift better with the smaller jump between the middle and granny ring. Are you planning on using a ramped and pinned 40 tooth ring? I would suggest doing so otherwise shifting might be disappointingly slow.

As for the 7703 and it's 14 tooth minimum tooth difference, you could probably get it to work with a 13 tooth difference but that would be it. I played around with some 10 speed FDs on another bike (Ultegra and 105) and was able to get the 105 to accept a 10 tooth difference (spec'd for 11 min) but the Ultegra (spec'd for 13) wasn't even close.

Look at the chainring spec for FC-6503

https://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830611829.pdf

52/42/30 is the spec.

Thanks for the all the replies-- let me try and answer the questions you guys had for me.

First, I am planning on using friction. The current plan is to build the bike up using 8 speed bar end shifters. So the FD will be friction.

Second, the BCD of the Sugino Cranks I am using is 130. They are technically "Sugino VP 130" cranks. Now I am not sure what the BCD is of the triple crank. Maybe I should check that. I actually do have a triple chainring from an ultegra crank-- I think that is a 30 tooth. If the BCD was the same I could swap it in. But I think for now I will try the 28 first and see how it works.

There are no pins or ramps on the chainrings.

Third-- Mr Operator. I saw that spec for the FC-6503. What I don't understand is why they don't have the spec for the 6503 front D, when they have the specs for everythig else. It really does appear to be the only thing that is missing. I can't explain that.

Inner ring is probably 74 and the ultegra 30 tooth would be the same. That said, the 28 tooth one you have should work fine with friction shifters.

This should work fine. A note about FD's. . . . the specs don't mean much at all. For example, I use a 9sp. 105 double FD from 2000, I can't recall the model. I use it with 26/44/48 rings. I think it's rated for 15t.
I friction shift also.

If you have trouble with the triple FD, try a 9 speed double. The 10 speed versions have a narrower cage, so they're not as desirable. You don't always need a triple FD with a triple crank.

On our tandem, I run an FSA crankset, a 6503 FD with 52-39-26, and Ultegra brifters. Works fine, though I did install an F-Stop chain overshift preventer. I replaced the 30T inner ring with a Salsa 26T. The 26T is just a plain ring, but doesn't need to be anything else. This setup is very common on tandems and is known to work well.

52 ring seems high. I suspect a 11 tooth rear for top gear. Make sure she is willing to go that fast.
https://www.jbarrm.com/cgi-bin/c42strt.cgi This is a link to a gear inch and shift. If i remember 52/11 will give over 35 mph
