cottered cranks
I have a number of cottered cranks I dont have on bikes, are they worth keeping? or should I donate them to a co-op?
I have a cottered crank on 1 of my 4 bikes do I need to keep a replacement around?
I dont really understand how they work :S (cotters make sense) they have a crazy built in axle/spindle

All depends on condition and model. Check ebay for sales, and see if you want to mess around with it.

I have a cottered Araya made bicycle with a bent chainwheel in my possession. I'm very temped to consider that as my next project and if so would be looking for a replacement crank. no promises either way, but could you toss up a few pictures of the cranks if not inconvenient?
also I think the plugging of the following website is in order for anyone who finds themselves working on cottered cranks:

That's a nice press ... kinda pricey.
My one experience with removing cotter pins from cranks ... it was a struggle. Could have used a press.
I found one at Harbor Freight for removing ball joints that would work ... but by then my bike-friendly buddy and his machinist neighbor had hammered it out (a torch was involved, too), so I never got a chance to try it out.
Those things are tough!
