How to extract a gear cable.

I'm replacing the front mech gear cable and I've got SRAM X.0 shifters. Getting the cable end into the shifter was easy enough but I can't get the darned thing out! Is there a trick to this. It's well and truly stuck in the shifter housing and any amount of wiggling the cable to and fro, just does not seem to release it. Is there a trick to extracting gear cables. I've tried the twist grip in all positions 1-2-3 and I can see the cable end but it's buried too deep in the guts of the shifter to try and winkle it out.

I don't know if this will help or not, but the online manual can be found at:

I downloaded the maintenance sheet from SRAM and it was suprisingly quite thorough. I stripped the shifter right down and removed the cable end. Reassembly was quite a challenge until I got the hang of the way the leaf spring fitted. Once that was done, I was home and dry.

Thanks for the link again.
