Alex rims
I have a surly LHT with the alex adventurer rims. I was watching t.v. last night when I heard a really loud boom, found it was a tire that blew out on my bike. I think I know why it blew out. Couple of days ago the tire was rubbing on the fender and blew off the rim. I replaced the tube with one that was larger than the tire, was a bit of a wrinkle in it when I installed it. It lasted a couple of days then blew out again last night. My question is, are these rims ok to use with a panaracer pasela with 120 lbs in them? Rim bowed out in 2 places. Here are a couple pics

If that is the rim bending out you need new rims.
It looks like the bead on the tire.

No it is the rim, I tried to bend it back into shape, but there are cracks/splits in the rim. I know this rim is shot, I have one more that I can use. My question is are these rims ok for that kind of pressure.

pasela in what size?
fatter tires can put more strain on the rim than narrower tires will at the same psi. There's also rim width to consider. narrower rims are more likely to fail like that than wider rims with fatter tires when inflated to higher psi.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

The brake pads on rim brakes slowly wear through the rim when you brake. Eventually, the rim gets so thin it cracks.. on low pressure tires sometimes it just bulges out a bit, but the pressure can blast the sidewall apart and leave jagged chunks of aluminum sticking out.
As soon as this happens the rim is completely ruined and unsafe to ride, in the unlikely event the rim could still get through the brakes.
It happens faster when you are riding in a lot of rainy weather and mud, which are abrasive between the rim and brake pad. You can usually feel the side of the rim beginning to wear as it becomes concave.
Just out of curiosity, how many miles have you done on those rims?

The paselas are 1 1/4" x 26, rims have about 1800 miles on them. The miles are winter miles here in Vancouver, on the side of a highway. Constantly covered in sand. That makes sense that it wore thin.

LET'S ROLL
What air pressure are you running? Is it within the limits on the tire sidewall?

probably a combination of inflating a 1-1/4" wide tire to 120psi and worn rims.
there's really almost no reason to go over 90psi for 1-1/4" tires.
here's a decent guide to inflation pressure.
