Barrel Adjuster Question
 

I have a bike with center-pull cantilever brakes and would like to use them with a set of drop-bar mounted levers, preferably non-aero.

Most bikes I have seen using center-pull cantis are MTBs and the brake levers have a barrel adjuster for fine tuning. Similarly, most bikes I've seen using drop bars and road levers have caliper brakes, where the brakes have the barrel adjuster.

If I run road levers with center-pull cantis, is there a way to have a barrel adjuster somewhere else in the path? I've seen a set of levers at Velo Orange that might work, but are there other options?

Yes. There is typically a barrel adjuster where the last piece of brake housing ends. On the front brake this would be on piece that is mounted on the stem (in the place of a spacer) and on the rear brake it could be built into the frame or separate clamped stop. If you look at pictures of cyclocross bikes, you'll see the various ways you can set it up.

Question: Why non-aero levers? Current aero levers are more efficient and have a better action.

I like the look of the non-aero levers, with the cables routed high and over the bars. If I can get that same look with aero levers I'm game. Either way I figure I'm still going to need the adjusters, right?

are these intended for brakes? most inline adjusters are intended for shifters only, much less pressure on sifter cables

My Jamis came with inline adjusters on the cantilever brakes. So some are made for brakes and if not made for them, they will work.

Check cyclocross bikes; they pretty much all use canti's. Find something there, it's easy enough to track down....

I contacted Jagwire about these, and they do ot recommend them for brakes. I think they have to say that. At least that is what I am hoping; I used them anyway. I have not had them on the bike very long, but I'm not sure that I like them better than the "round" inline barrel adjusters.

This is the way Bianchi (Volpe) handled the problem. If you have a rear brake bridge, this will work. The bridge is not threaded. The ajustment is made with the nut. If you dont have a bridge, then the seatpost clamp bolt hanger is a good option.

older schwinn non-aero brake levers had adjusters where the housing exits the body. '73 le tour had them.

I use the above with Campagnolo mini v´s on my cross bike and they never caused any trouble.
