building a wheel from shimano alfine
My husband really wants the 8-speed internal hub disc brake ensemble.
So I was going to build a wheel for him with this.
Suggestions before I begin? Others who have done teh same thing?
I want to build it on a 700x23 - 28 rim. --What type and size of spokes?
Suggestions on shifters, rotors, or cogs?
Thanks,
Kristin

What is the planned use of the wheel?
I have two Alfine wheels, I like the Mavic a319 rim and DT 2.0/1.8/2.0 Competiton Spokes. I built my wheels 3x, if I was to do it over, I'd go 2x, with 3x the spoke's angle out of the rim is too obilque.
I run standard cogs that fit the 3 spline and choose the size that fits the front chainring and my application.
Shifter: two Shimano shifters, the Nexus 8 speed gripshift and the Alfine thumb shifter, both only fit 22.2mm upright bars. If you want to have a shifter with dropbars, best option is the JTEK barend shifter made for Alfine.
You need to purchase the kit that includes the cassette joint and anti-rotation washers.
For a brake rotor, you need to choose a Shimano centerloc in the correct size for your hubby's bike, the other option is a centerloc to 6 bolt adapter.

other rims you might want to consider: Sun Ringle CR-18, Velocity Synergy, Velocity Dyad.
DT competition 2.0/1.8/2.0mm spokes sounds good. really hard to go wrong with those. Others you might want to consider are DT Alpine III 2.34/1.8/2.0mm spokes or DT super comp 2.0/1.7/1.8mm spokes.
use brass nipples. DT comp and alpine III should come with brass nipples.
the length of spoke depends on a lot of variables... so first thing to do would be to settle on the rim and spoke count. Hub we already know, but in what drilling? 32h or 36h?
