I wouldn't think there are any short cage RD that could handle it, but would a mid cage, like a short mountain RD work?

there are two factors in play when choosing a derailer, one is chain wrap and the other is largest cog. Road derailers typically can only take a 28 tooth largest cog, and even that can take a bit of finesse to make it work. Mountain derailers can accommodate up to a 36.

Chain wrap is given by the difference between the large and small chain rings, added to the difference between the large and small cogs. I don't know the numbers off the top of my head but I'd wager you're in long cage territory.

If it's Shimano, then you have no worries about using a MTB rear derailleur with a road shifter. If it is SRAM, then there are some compatibility issues between road shifters and MTB RDs which have been discussed here before.
