Because they can?

Because they're British?

^ that and economies of scale. Campy is a much larger company.

Hope is basically the British version of Chris King. That is the comparison that should be made, not to Campy.

overpriced for its weight and quality and comes in gaudy colours?

White Industries makes better hubs compared to chris king, IMO.

So if you were to build up a road wheel for campy, what aftermarket options are out there in hubs? Hope is campy compatible, CK is not. White?

Well ya know, you can get Campy hubs aftermarket. That's probably what I would go with.

At least they have a good web site for maintainence. https://www.hopegb.com/page_mep_force_37.html
The only bad thing I see about this hub and others like it is that the right side bearing is inboard. This puts quite a bending load on the axle. The idea of the freehub was to get the drive side bearing outboard because 6,7,8 etc. cogs were puting a load on the axle and they were bending and breaking. Suntour, shimano, and the older Hugi hubs have the bearing out board making for a stronger hub.
