Stuck Derailleur Hanger
 

Hi there. Got tangled up with a car last week and long story short, derailleur hanger snapped and went into the spokes.

I've bought a new derailleur hanger already, but I'm having a really hard time getting the broken chunk of hanger off of the derailleur (SRAM Rival).

The hanger got bent in a way where its lodged a bit on the derailleur (picture once I can get one uploaded), so I've tried to use a hacksaw to cut a bit into it to relieve the pressure. No luck though.

Does anyone have any tips as to removing a derailleur hanger that just refuses to budge? As a college student whose spent far too much this year on random crashes, I'd really like to avoid having to get a new derailleur when the one I have works fine. Thanks in advance!

I think unless you have a vice or big visegrips your current method of attack is the best. you'll just have to cut it off. the problem is that this has twisted and is likely out of round so it may be cross threading on its way out.

Just force it off with big pliers.
You can cut it off if you want.
The hangar is Al so there is no worry about cross threading. The DR threads are steel.

Don't be so sure that the derailleur has suffered no damage. Once you have it remounted on the hanger get the bike drive train up near eye level, with derailleur in the small cog and middle/small chainwheel (triple/double) and sight toward the front. The pulleys should be in a vertical plane and should remain in the same plane as you pull back on the derailleur and therefore rotate the pulleys. If not you have some twisting of the derailleur and it will not work optimally.

Find someone with a bench vise so you can firmly secure the piece. Or you might also try some very sturdy locking pliers. Good luck.
