The cable hanger on my bike is POS, a bendy piece of steel.
Attachment 153837 The aluminium ones don't have enough drop for a smoothe cable curve. I like the idea of an uphanger style mounted at the fork crown but this is where I have my dynamo lamp. My current lamp mount consists of 2 pieces of aluminium, a fork crown bit with a riser bit bolted on and the pivot which absorbs a lot of vibration Attachment 153836 Attachment 153835 Is it sensible to combine the two. I guess I would have to make it from some aluminium stock, dremelled, hacksawed and filed by hand. |
I don't think you could make something worse than what you currently have so you might as well go for it. Test it out on some flat roads before you go bombing down any big hills.

Well I bought an Uphanger and it doesn't work with my fork
You need a lot of exposed fork crown like you get in most welded unicrown forks. An old style brazed fork like mine has about 14mm (vertical) of attatchment face on the crown then the lower headset race juts out. Also the distance between the fork crown and the cable centreline is much smaller on my bike, I imagined that would be standard, silly me. The only solution is to make my own (with an integral lamp mount and threaded adjuster) out of some aluminium stock. Gotta be the good stuff, failure of this part will not be pretty. |
how about hanging the light off of a minoura space grip?

I need the bars for the bar bag and the fork mount position provides good protection during air travel. I can understand the need for a space bar but I really hate having bits added when I can remove, simplify and integrate things.

I would either buy this or make something similar to this one.

If you can find a lump of a decent aircraft aluminium to make the hanger and mount combo from then go for it. I like the idea and if you're comfy working with hacksaws and files and drilling holes then a successful product is only limited by your ability to imagine what it should look like.
The alloy you use should have a T3 to T6 designation to ensure that it's got the most tensile strength and acts more like a true spring than a bit of lard. Or at least be a lump off an alloy that you know the number of and can trace its lineage to ensure that it has the qualities you're after for such an item. |
