26 X 2.1 tires on 26 X 1.50 rims?

26 X 2.1 tires on 26 X 1.50 rims?
I'm still dizzy from reading Sheldon Brown's amazing info on matching tire and rim sizes! So excuse this post if it seems repetitive. I'm trying to cobble together a knocking-around-the-campsite bike, using parts from numerous older mountain bikes. I have a decent front wheel that is 26 X 1.50. Would I be alright to put a knobby 26 X 2.1 tire on that rim? Or should I just buy a more narrow tire tomorrow and quit trying to recycle everything in my garage? BTW, I'm not trying to build a bike that will do much more than get me down a dirt road for a bit or for shirt rides along river pathways. I've got a good bike for more serious rides. Thanks. rcd
P.S. If the tire/rim combo is acceptable, I assume using a 26 X 2.0 tube is perfectly acceptable?

The rim isn't 26 x 1.5. The old tire is that size . At least that's what I'm translating your post as being since you mention possibly buying a narrower tire to fit the rim. If the rim itself, and not the tire, was truly 1.5 inch wide you'd be mounting bigger DH smaller size tires or even smaller motorcycle tires on that rim. More likely your actual rim is in the range of 1 inch wide to the outer sidewalls and that much less between the bead flanges.
The 2.1 MTB tires are designed to wrap around a LOT and hook onto the same rim you're using for the 1.5 inch tire. They look like donuts when mounted and aired up but they are fine.

Some older Araya rims did come stamped with 26x1.50" right on them. They are a bit wider cross section. If this is your case, they'll hold a 2.1" tire just fine.

Yes, they are 1.50 Araya rims, stamped right on the rim. So it sounds like things should work. Thanks for the help! rcd

Are they really 1.5 inch wide across the brake tracks or is that the size of tire they were intended for? Just curious as if they are actually that wide they must be monstrous.

You are right! Although the rim is stamped "Araya 26 X 1.50 HE AP-21", the width from outside to outside is 1 1/8". The inside measurement is 7/8"! So the 26 X 1.50 does NOT refer to the rim size after all! So now what do you think. Will that knobby 26 X 2.1 inch tire work. Maybe the HE AP-21 tells me something I should know..... rcd

It's fine. Mount it and ride the knobs off them. Heck at 7/8 inside this is still wider than the rims that some folks mount those tires onto. 7/8 wide between the flanges puts them into the same width range as Sun Rhyno Lite rims.
