Deore XT

Hi there I have an older Deore XT 8SIS MTB shifter and I was wondering if it would work in friction shifting mode?

I think i would eventually put index shifters on it but I want to do that later.

Also I want to put this on my roady, if is more recommended to get a bar end, grip shift (kludged onto my bars at the stem) or a thumb shifter?

Yes it will work in friction mode and yes it will work with a bar end shifter... ran a set up like this for years with no issues at all.

Some older Shimano derailleurs do not play well with Suntour bar cons because of the difference in actuation ratios but this is rare and limited to a few derailleur models.
