Spoke length rounding question

I am getting ready to build up a set of wheels and have calculated my spoke lengths.

For the front the length says 271.6 but the spokes I want only are available in 270 or 276. I am assuming i should round down the the 270.

On the back the length should be 281.6, and the spokes available are 280 or 282. Which one should i chose there?

For more info the rims are deep v's and the hubs are miche high flange track hubs fixed/free.

Thanks in advance.

Always round down. But I find it hard to believe that the rear wheel should have spokes 10 mm longer than the front.

Rear is 3 cross front will be 2 cross. Thus the difference.

Thanks for the reply, thats what i thought, just wanted to make sure. It will be my first build, though i will have professional there to help me.

what is the spoke count of the wheels?

generally, 3x will work for 28h, 32h and 36h for 700c wheels

2x can be used on 20h, 24h and 28h.

Not to disagree but a friend of mine is riding 36 spoke wheels, 2 cross rear, 1 cross front. Looks weird.

Both are 32 hole rims, the front will technically be a 2 leading 2 trailing lacing pattern.

I don't see any reason you can't do that. On a 32 spoke wheel 3 cross is more common and possibly stronger. 2 cross will be a bit lighter.

yeah, generally, 3x or 4x for 36h wheels, but there's only the strength of the hub flanges to consider.

Use 281.00 on the rear...and use 14mm nipples if you can to avoid scratching the rim - especially at the joint.

Use 271.00 for the front....and once again use 14mm nipples if you can.

This will result in the ends of the spokes coming right up to or just a tad below the screwdriver flat except at the joint...

If you go 12mm nipples...that'll work...but be careful with the bottom of the spoke wrench or scratches will occur on the rim finish.

You may end up with 1-2 threads showing at the joint nipples if using 12mm - but does no harm function-wise for the wheel.

Whatever you do, do not go higher than 272 and 282.

Good Luck!
