New rider with stupid shifting problem

I just started riding and bought a Tommaso Monza. The FD is a Shimano Tiagra 4500 9-speed and the RD is Shimano 105 6500. The shifters are Shimano Tiagra 9-speed. The Crankset is FSA Tempo COmpact 50/34T and the Cassette is Sunrace 11-25 9-speed. It seems like a good bike for my small busget and i will upgrade if i really get into it.

My problem is this - I just got the bike and went out for a ride and as I'm shifting the bike is bouncing in between gears in the rear. In certain gears i would have no problem, then I would shift, to climb a hill for instance, and it would bounce in between gears while i pedal - making the bike basically unridable. Also, the FD was operating fine, then all of a sudden when i would attempt to shift from a high gear to a low gear the chain would only shift while I hold the shifter in, but drop back as soon as I let it go.

I'm pretty sure that i'm just doing something wrong and need to get used to it since i'm not used to the shifting on this bike, but I want to make sure that there isn't something wrong with the bike. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks -

The rear derailler cable tension needs adjustment. There is a knurled adjustment barrel where the cable enters the derailler. Turn couterclockwise 1/4 turn, the ride and see how its changed. If it is a bit better give it another 1/4 turn. If worse turn back 1/2 a turn. Park tool is the reource you need to bookmark for bike maintenance and adjustment issues http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/index.shtml

If you got the bike in the mail, it will need some work to get it dialed in. If you bought it at a shop, they should make adjustments for you.

I've had bad luck with SunRace cassettes, but you should be able to get it in better shifting form than you describe.

FYI, # speeds isn't relevant to the FD, only the RD and shifter. An FD is either for double (two rings) or triple (three rings), and that should be reflected in the model number, e.g. 4500 vs. 4503. If the RD is 105, the model number would be 550n, not 650n.

I think you're saying this backwards. The springs pull the FD onto the lower gear (smaller ring) unless the shifter pulls it up onto the bigger ring. The adjustment could be way off, or the shifter screwed up. If you want to play with it yourself see the links in the thread below. But I think you should take it to a shop.
