Which rear derailleur do I use?
I have this old Schwinn that the rear derailleur broke off.
I'm looking for a replacement and found these Shimano Tourney's online... It has a three ring crankset so I already know it needs the RD-TX51 and not the TX31 (Unless I'm wrong) http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-Tourne...9149783&sr=8-1 http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-RD-TX5...9149783&sr=8-4 But the problem is I don't understand this with/without the hanger business. Your help would be appreciated. It's either i fix this bike or it's going to be destroyed :twitchy: |
The hanger is the piece of the frame or extra material the the derailleur "hangs" off of. If your frame has the hanger built into the dropout then you need a RD without a hanger. It the frame does not have the hanger built into the dropout then you need the one with the hanger.
What model is your Schwinn? what year is it? Can you post a pic? |

Lol my parents said either fix it or dump it. And I hate to see a perfectly good bike go to waste. |
From the picture it appears that the hanger may be bent. If so it will need to be straightened.

Yes it is bent. They make a special tool to bend a align the hanger. A Park DAG-2.
Look at the website to get an idea of the alignment process and how it is supposed to be. In the absence of the tool you can use something else but you will have to remove the wheel. The bend has to occur at/near the original bend location (Meaning it has to slip over the hanger to not bend just the thread section of the hanger. And it won't be perfectly straight compared to the wheel as it should be. See the attached photo for where to bend and how to align. |

I understand most mechanical things, but not gear adjustment. I built my bike from various spare parts.
I cannot get first gear, even if I push the derailleur with my finger. Tried adjustment with the screw, but it does not get 7th gear either. Its an old shimano, I would ask u about my front 3 gear selector that does not look straight, but maybe I would need to post a pic. S |
Thing about using the proper tool is by screwing into the Derailler mounting tab It is not bent across the threaded hole.
Shimano and Campagnolo pro tool sets also have a tool like that .. A bike shop will do the task for a few bucks. Index schemes demand the derailler tab is in a plane perfectly Parallel with the frame center line measured by seeing that the tool has an equidistant relationship to the rim thru a 270 degree swing of the long arm of the tool .. fore /aft-up /down. Just bring in the bike as is with the wheels on it and It will only take a minute. |
