Metallic noise when coasting – maybe in the ratchet?

I’ve recently started to hear a harsh noise coming from the rear wheel when coasting. Imagine the sound of a metallic object whacking a spoke very sharply. When I pedal (light or hard) the sound goes away. Happens at all speeds. The sound occurs once per wheel revolution.
Sooo…I got the cluster gear off, but want to get into the ratchet pawl mechanism to see what is going on. That is where I’m stuck. I don’t see any kind of snap ring or retaining clip and have no idea how to get the splined drive off. Anyone know the trick?

Suntour Powerflo cluster
Shimano FH-RM40 hub
2000 Specialized Crossroads, 9800 miles of moderate road riding. I don’t baby it, I don’t beat it.

Ok, I answered my own question. Reread sheldonbrown.com a second time, then reread it again a third time SLOWLY.
I got the ratchet assembly apart and it all looked fine. No chunks of metal fell out, no missing or broken parts. The original grease looked good and was plentiful. I got everything back together and it is smooth and quiet. Took the bike for a 20 mile test run and it worked as it should. Time will tell if the fix lasts.
