Changing BB what tool(s) do I need?
 

In planning to replace my square taper BB with a modern external BB, what tool(s) do I need? I think I need a BB tool. Is there a universal BB tool that would handle a square taper and the newer ISIS and external BBs?

Nope. Sorry. Not that I'm aware of.

I'd need to know what exactly is the current BB/crankset and what you're replacing it with to give you any recommendations as to which tools to buy.

NO and yes. you need several different tools. first you need a crank puller to remove you old cranks, this may or may not be a universal design that you can use it on newer styles but I doubt it. then you need a lockring tool and pin spanner plus a fixed cup tool to remove the old BB.

now you need the correct tool to install the new BB.

I would suggest you take this to a shop as there are atleast 2 must have tools you you may never use again. plus for a novice mechanic removing the fixed cup can be challenging.

Basically, you need to decide whether you're ever going to use these tools again. If not, it might be worth it to take it to a mechanic.

On the other hand, if you want to learn more about bike maintenance it's a good learning experience. Basically you're looking at about $40 worth of tools. Maybe a little less depending on the brands and places you shop, also which tools you require for this job. For example, if you've got self-extracting cranks you don't need a crank puller. That's not common, but it's a possibility.

The Park Tools website is a good resource for How-To guides.

The crank arm extractor uses the threaded socket in the crank arm to push against to remove the crankarm, then you need the tool made to work with your particular BB, then you are donme with those .

External bearing BBs use an entirely different tool to put those in, shimano's is different from Campag.

Where you located? I have these tools and just did this job on one of my bikes. If your near by you can bring your bike over and I'd be happy to help. If not maybe your near by someone else that'd be willing to help you out.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it will likely be one time. Looks like it is better to bring it over to my LBS for this.

I'd check the cost of the change at the LBS, I only paid $13 for the tool to remove the cartridge bb. Granted I will only use it once and probably never need it again. The other tool for the I paid $19 for and I'll have it if I ever need to change out chainrings etc. So, IMO if the LBS wants more than $40 I'd do it/did it myself. Besides you learn a little about your bike and you get the satisfaction of a job well done.
