Sram Apex cassette fit issue
Here's the problem:
Got my Apex 2x10 spd group in the mail last night. I was most nervous about the cassette, cause my road wheels are maybe 6 years old. Mavic hubs (can't remember which model) on open pro rims. I started with an 8spd cassette when I originally bought them, switched to a 9 spd earlier in the year.
New 10 spd group arrives, the first thing I do is try fitting the cassette, I was just nervous about it fitting, I thought 10 spd, it would be too wide since its such an older wheel. To my surprise, it fit fine, actually too fine, cause it wouldn't tighten all the way. When I tightened the lockring, it still had wiggle room, and the cassette could rattle on the freehub body.
It seemed like it was missing a spacer, maybe one that fits on the backside of the cassette? All the spacers where present in between all the gears.
What is going on here?

You nailed it.
Mavic freehub bodies are wider than the Shimanos that most people design for. The simple remedy is to use a spacer behind the cassette so the front lip extends beyond the freehub body and the lockring can compress it. I believe that Mavic has they're own special spacer, but space is space, so use anything of appropriate size.

yup, you need, I think, a total of 3mm spacers on the back of the freehub body -- 10speed cassettes are actually a little narrower than 8/9speed, in addition to the Mavic body being longer than shimano's.
