Mounting a Rear Rack
 

Hey everyone first time poster here,

I am looking to mount a rear rack on my 06-07 Specialized Rockhopper Hardtail Mountain Bike and then mount a milk crate on top of that for getting groceries/small items and just riding around

However, the rear wheel attachment is a "quick-release" and I am wondering if this will impede the installation, also the disc brake component might also be in the way.

Does anyone know if this will work/any solutions/a bike rack that would work?

I can't be sure but from the closeup it LOOKS like you have an unused threaded hole just above the QR skewer that is intended for mounting a rack or fender. If there is this same threaded hole on the other side then you're good to go with your rack. The only thing is that you may need to get a rack designed for use on disc brake frames to clear the caliper.

Up top on the seat stays there should be a set of similar welded in or swaged in threaded inserts. If not you'll have to use the seat stay bridge or some other method of fixing the upper forward brackets for the rack.

Milk crates are pretty darn heavy on their own. You may want to look at a lighter top box option. Or even make up some side bags from something. Or just buy a set of cheaper pannier bags.

Does anyone know of any racks that will clear disc brakes? Im sure there have to be some out there...

Your quick release skewer won't get in the way. But you close your skewer improperly anyway. It should be parallel to the chainstay. No, it won't pop open if you hit something with it...not if it is properly tightened.

For the rack, you may need something that stands off like this rack or this rack. Since you have the eyelet, the Topeak would be a better choice.

Edit: I looked on the reviews for the Topeak Explorer and one person had mounted it on an 07 Specialized Rockhopper which is exactly the bike I have, perfect link for me, thanks cyccommute!

Look to the right of the skewer handle in your first picture. There's a threaded eyelet for mounting the rack.
