So I have a new SRAM Rival group on the way and I have all the tools I need besides bottom bracket tools. I've been searching and I'm not sure which ones I need for removal of the old one and installation of the new one. The bike is a 2007 Trek 1000. Also, do I need a crank removal tool?

Thanks for the google tutorial, I was pretty sure that was the tool I needed to install the new BB but it's definitely not the tool I need to get my old one out. Maybe I wasn't clear before...the trek 1000 is entry level components and the BB is kind of recessed. You're killing me, Smalls! You need to specify the crank that's on there, but if it's a fairly recent Shimano cartridge square taper bb in there, that's likely the tool. You sure you have a bunch of tools that you should be using? Just razzin' ya. Good that you're trying to do your own work, but you need to sharpen your research skills and being specific with components over and above the bike frame they're mounted to...and you can always mosey on over to parktool.com's repair section and just read away, they've got it all covered (well, almost).

Yeah, thanks...It's a ****ty crank that doesn't say anything on it. I've been over the park tools site and I spent fffffooooorrrreeeeevvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeerrrrrr looking and the don't really say how to find out what part you have and what tool to get. I also bought "Zinn and the art of road bike maintenance" which is really helpful but I don't want to buy tools that I'll never need. So, I know how to do the work but I'm not sure about what specialized tools I need.

Since the crank and bottom bracket removal is likely to be a one-time thing, consider having your LBS do that part of the job. It will be relatively cheap and you won't have to buy tools you will probably never need again.

If you want to do the job yourself then here is probably what you will need. I looked at the Trek web site under "Bike Acchives" for the 2007 1000 and I'm pretty sure it's a square taper Shimano compatible cartridge bottom bracket. If so, you will need an 8 mm allen key to remove the crank fixing bolts, a standard M22x1.0 threaded crank puller (Park CWP-7 or similar) and a splined bottom bracket tool (Park BBT-22 or similar).

As a rule, if it's a tool, you will at some point need it. Buy it now, and you'll have it. As a simple rule, if the tool is going to cost me the same as a trip to the shop, the tool is worth it.

Yes you will need a crank puller, yes you will need a standard bb tool (if you get one that is "Shimano compatable" you'll most likely be ok, it looks like a cassette tool but bigger).

This is the one I have, it worked on every bottom bracked I've used it on so far (Square taper as well as ISIS). If you are getting an external type one, I'm not familiar with those since I don't have any so you'll have to gather from others what you'll need.
