Spacers for 1" threadless with 1-1/8" stem?
I'm planning on getting a new 1" threadless fork, and currently a 1-1/8" stem mounted directly over the headset (came cut that way, unfortunately). As I now want to add in a few spacers when I install the new fork, I realized I have a problem--I need spacers that are wide enough for the 1-1/8" stem, but narrow enough for the 1" steer tube.
Asking at my LBS, the mechanic told me that all of their 1" spacers would not have a large enough outer diameter to comfortably rest the stem on, and that it might be impossible to find them. The only workaround that he thought would work was buying another shim, and cutting it to the length of each spacer, which I'd really like to avoid. After quick search through these forums, I found someone else in the same predicament, and he was simply told to buy 1" spacers. But, will these be wide enough? Are there any spacers made specifically for this situation? Thanks. |
The 1" spacers will be wide enough. They'd have to be thinner than a stem shim to not work, and I've never seen any like that ever.

I had the same setup on my road bike. 1" spacers were fine.
The 1" to 1 1/8" adapter I have has a lip. I installed it with the lip on the bottom, which made the bottom of the stem have a 1" diameter. |
Thanks, this is really good news, I'll pick up some 1" spacers along with the fork then.

Yep. Ritchey stems come with a shim for 1" steerers, which is a nice touch. Never had an issue.

Al, the OP's next sentence should answer your question.
