Bent 16 spoke Bontrager Select rim, toss or keep?
I got hit in a very low speed left-turn accident that took out my front tire, a 16 spoke Bontrager Select, on my Lemond Buenos Aires about a month ago. The frame and fork were fine, but the front rim was unable to be trued safely. Tonight, I disassembled the wheel completely to see if I could keep the hub and rim while only needing to replace the spokes and nipples. With the rim on a flat surface, it has a good 3/8"-1/2" discrepancy around the circumference.
I don't think that it would be possible to take that much play out of the rim if I were going to relace it, but I wanted to see what everyone else has to say.

I like 32 spoke normal wheels myself. more spokes make truing practical twice the spokes share the load in smaller segments of the rim..
Of Course if you have an insurance claim, against the driver, and the inspection is over they should provide a replacement wheel.
If the adjuster hasn't seen it and you took it apart , you have probably no evidence to base the claim on.

They came with the bike and rode well; so, I kept them on the bike until this happened. I already replaced the wheel with a Forte Titan to roughly match the back wheel which is still a Bontrager.
I am looking to upgrade to a larger spoke count but figured since I have the rim, lets see if it is possible to build it back up. The 16 spokes will make truing a pain, especially on a warped rim, but I wanted to see if it was possible/practical.

If you can true that wheel without having spokes more than 20-25% off base base tension then i'd say go for it. I highly doubt you'll be able to bring in a rim that is clearly damaged without affecting spoke tension greatly anyways.
Worse case is you relace to a new rim.
