Bottom Bracket Dilema

so ive got this old biscayne (only brand indication I can find it) that has Takagi Tourney XT cranks (square tapered). The non-drive side crank has become loose and has started to round out. The bottom bracket seems fairly old, i think it has holes to disassemble it with a pin spanner. I was wondering if anyone knows of some sort of substitute for takagi or if there's a place that still sells them (no luck on ebay or cl). also was wondering what a good substitute would be for a pin spanner (If i cant get ahold of one). thanks.
peace

How old is your bike? Figure out the BB shell size and consider upgrading to a sealed cartridge style BB. No one will ever know and you can keep telling everyone your bike is 100% original haha

Square-taper cranks are one of the most reliable standards in the bike world, and "old" by itself is not a compelling reason to replace a BB.
If you aren't too fussy you should be able to pick up either only a left crank, or a complete crankset and replace only that.
The odds are very good that any matching crankset(double/triple, tooth count, arm length...) will bolt right on with a minimum of fuss.

Depending on how tight it's screwed in, I've had good luck with using a drift punch instead of a pin spanner.

thanks fellas

thanks for the suggestions so far, not only has the left crank started to round off but so has the spindle. u think it would be possible to try and find a new spindle and left crank arm? or this a pipe dream?

I highly doubt the spindle is rounding off. You're probably just seeing some wear in the surface treatment.
Shame about the crankarm. Those Tourney XTs are classic. I'd replace it with a vintage Sakae/SR triple from the same era. You may even not have to change the BB.

+1

Your best bet to find a replacement arm(s) is over on the C+V sub-forum. There is a 'in search of' thread there. Add a picture of what you currently have and your odds of success will increase 10x ;)
