hub engagement problem?

So today I was riding and was going downhill, shifted up and felt a huge jump in my pedals. Shifted again and felt the same thing.

It really feels like there is too much play before it actually engages. About 20-30 degrees at times. I never noticed this before today, so couldn't say what it was.

I also noticed when I spin my wheel it doesn't make the clicking noise like it did before. Instead of a constant steady click click click click click, it is more spaced out.

How much play is normal before it should engage? This bike is only a few weeks old, there is no way I wore anything out already.

Thanks.

What make and model are the bike and the rear hub? No, what you are experiencing is not normal and should never happen on a new bike. Take it back to your dealer to have the problem corrected.

I agree on both counts we need more info and this is not acceptable on a new bike. is it an IGH type hub? or a derailleur bike?

you best bet is take it back to the bike shop you bought it from. odds are the feehub just need a little lube or minor adjustment.

It's a 2011 specialized secteur.

Derailleur bike, the rims are Mavic CXP22's.

Went to my LBS today (not where I got the bike) and the play seems pretty normal compared to other bikes. I googled around and I guess there are 16 engagement points, 360/16 is 22.5 degrees between, which seems right. Never noticed it to be honest in these past 3 weeks.

But the freewheel not clicking worries me. I remember when I got it, there was a very noticeable and loud clicking. I would hear it walking through a loud train station.

Now its pretty much silent and if you listen closely you can hear a quiet spaced out click. Gonna avoid riding it, and then tuesday bring it in and see what they say.

Thanks.

Actually I slowly counted and there are 24 engagement points.

I took it back to the shop today and told him what happened and he said he would take a look at it. About 30 minutes later he came back and said he couldn't replicate my issue, but the cables did need an adjustment.

As for the wheel not clicking, he said some are just quieter than others. And to bring it back in another month or two to get adjusted again.

I have a feeling some crap got in there and he just didn't feel like going through the hassle of looking into it. This stuff isn't rocket science, need to learn it myself.
