which wheels can i get
So i am a complete noob at this for starters, i recently got a used huffy road bike from craigslist. Its a huffy frame with shimano for everything else, both the front and rear wheels are bent, and the tire are gone.
Since i am still new at this i have no idea which wheels will fit, the rim measures 24 inches, i took it down to my local bike shop and the guy told me it was 26 1-3/8 I wanna pick up a used set of used wheels off ebay with tires, so do i look for the 26 1-3/8 or the 24 inch wheel, and this is probably stupid but will a 700c fit? |
Sounds like you need 26 inch wheels. I would highly recommend discussing this with your local bike shop, since there are so many ways to go wrong buying used wheels.
|
well if i get everything new it will cost me 120+tax, since i have no job right now, i am also cheap, looking for a used set seems better
|
Good luck
|
$120 in wheels on a Huffy? Just use the $120 and start shopping for a better bike instead.
No job? Hit the thrift stores and garage sales. I bought a set of wheels, with tires, tubes, and the bike attached, for $5 at a garage sale last weekend. |
A 700 will not fit.

Wheels and tires would cost more than the bike is worth.

Usually when u get used bikes if you do not know a single thing about mechanic you are toasted because the lbs will milk you sort of speak. The only way to go for sure if you dont know mechanic is with used stuff that is 100000% ok.
Anyhow, what do you mean with bent wheels? Maybe the wheels need to be trued. If thats the case u don't need new wheels but will be cheaper if you have a friend or find somebody at CL to true them for you for free. Stuff i have done a few times already. If the wheels are not true and in bad shape usually the LBS plan is "hey, u need new wheels." How bad are the wheels? for me a bend rim is a rim bent like an 8 or squared in one part of the rim. If the wheel waves left and right might need to be trued. Good luck |
Spend around 20 bucks on tires/tubes from Niagara Cycle, put them on your bent wheels and take it from there, at least you'll be rolling...(?)
And you might try a different bike shop, pretty sure I could get a couple steel wheels for around $50 from my guys! |
looks like they had dents and someone did not the best job of fixing them, when i put weight on the bike you cant even notice that they wave, i am thinking of just paying the 40 for the new tires and just ride it
and i like my huffy, less likely to get stolen, and all the parts on it are shimano |
and i guess the 700 will not fit cause they are to big, but the 650 are gonna be just a bit smaller, will they work?
|
No, probably not - and that's an unusual size, probably have a tough time finding them, getting tires etc. Issues with brakes reaching the rims, hub widths - ride what you got or get new steel 26s.
|
i guess i will just ride it till it brakes in half or something, the only reason i dont wanna get the stuff from my lbs is because he will be giving me the lowest end things possible, the wheels they have for my bike are $40 each, i asked which hub was on it and he said just some "basic one", i rather just ride my slightly bent wheel with a shimano hub
shimano is good right? |

shimano is good right? Start hitting garage sales and thrift stores. Or post wanted to buy basic wheels on your local C/L, in the bicycles for sale section (no one looks in the wanted section). Need to get educated on bike stuff, or you will likely get ripped off. In any deal, the person with the most knowledge wins. Spend some time on google, doing searches, etc. |
i guess i just need to stop rushing and take me time looking around
so one more question, my wheel itself measure 24 inches, and uses a 26 inch tire, so when looking for the wheels am i looking for the 24 or 26? |
They will be 26" wheels. Problem is there are LOTS of differently sized 26" wheels. Just look for wheels off of trashed Murray, Free Spirit, Huffy, etc 10-speeds from the 70s.
It's really not worth putting much money into this bike. Here's the chart showing various 26" tires, among others. Your wheels are of the 590mm ISO variety. |
aside from wheels it does not need anything else and i dont really plan to invest anything else into it
