need freewheel advice
 

hi. i just got this wheelset with shimano dura ace hub. i'm wondering what kind of freewheel i can fit on there, what threads, how many gears. or do i need to measure it or something? any advice appreciated! thanks!

But a D-A freewheel hub must be really vintage. And number of gears will depend more on frame, axle and shifters than on the hub.

Do you really mean freewheel or are you referring to a cassette/freehub combination? Is the wheelset over 20 years old? D/A hasn't been making freewheel systems for many years. If that is the case, Sheldon Brown's article can help with that too. See: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html

Axle width? just a guess any 6 0r 7 speed freewheel , if the axle from lock nut to lock nut is 126mm.

it's 126mm. so can i assume i'm safe if i order a 6-7 speed shimano or suntour or "english threaded" freewheel? just dont want to order the wrong thing. thanks!

Yes, if running friction for rear shifting. Otherwise, you'll need to ensure the freewheel is compatible with the indexed shifter, specifically the actuation (cable-pull) ratio and number of speeds.

There's far too much axle extending beyond the locknut. The axle should not extend beyond the dropout. This one clearly will. You will probably need an additional axle spacing collar or two. I don't see any in the picture.

You measured the axle width between locknuts to be 126 mm. What's the total axle length? It should not be more than 130 mm. What does the non-driving side look like? Something is fishy.

U have many brands that will fit in there... iso, english threaded, shimano, regina, campagnolo, suntour, mavic, zeus only to mention some. I agree with everybody, 126 mm 5/6/7 speeds.

Be careful with shimano because some of the 7 speed clusters aren't freewheels but cassettes. So look carefully.

uh oh, i bought this on ebay and haven't gotten it yet. the seller said the width was 126. i hope this isn't a disaster.

The same is true of Sun Tour and Campy as they made 7-speed cassettes as well as freewheels.

I agree that there is too much axle stub sticking out of the drive side locknut. The correct protrusion is 5.5 mm on each end.

A 5-speed (120 mm OLD) hub will have an axle length of 131 mm measured from end to end (the entire axle, not the locknut face distance) and a 6/7-speed hub (126 mm OLD) will have a 137 mm axle length.

Shimano's spline remover pattern has been adopted by IRD Sun Race and Sachs,
[SRAM wasn't interested in the Malliard part of Sachs when they bought them out, so the freewheel manufacturer went under] Sun tour is gone too, no new stuff..
unless you want to collect a bunch of freewheel removers..
Mechanically, 2 notch removers are in second tier below .

Agree with hill, i totally forgot about those ones. Long time ago. There is a detail, if the driver side is not sticking that much out probably the wheel was used as a fixed gear at some point? OP, do not worry thats and easy fix, thats the nice about those old hubs, you can play with them if something is not ok or if you need more space. But looks ok for me.
