7 speed freewheel in 126 mm dropouts?

I ride a mid-80s aluminum Vitus and it's time to replace my old Regina 6-speed 14-28 freewheel.

If I can find one, will a Shimano 7 speed,14-28, Hyperglide, freewheel fit the 126 mm dropouts?

Is there another 7 speed, 14-28 freewheel I can use with this spacing?

A quick search and you'd have found that 6 and 7 speed freewheels almost exclusively use 126mm spacing. The spacing between cogs on a 7 speed freewheel is less than that of a 6 speed freewheel.

I though that you could use any 7 speed freewheel with that spacing

If you want a French freewheel to match you bike, Mailliard made 7 speed freewheels called "Super Compact". I have two of these freewheels and I really like them as they work great with the Sedis SL narrow chain I found by chance at eBay last year and they seem to be bulletproof. They come around at eBay only once in a while and are getting quite rare and a bit expensive NOS as I think they were only around for a short time till Sachs tied up with Maillard in the late 80's to make their own new version with a diffrent tooth profile that works with Sach indexed rear derailleurs which you can still find plentiful NOS and used at eBay for reasonable prices. They should also work OK, but I suspect best with Sachs (Rival?) indexed derailleurs. Shimano seven speed freewheels should also work, but your final choice might really depend on your rear hub threading because it may determine what brand woud be easiest to match it, as some brands are easier to find for certian threading. Best if it's English as that's the most common out there for all brands. I suspect that most 7 speed freewheels were designed to fit 126 rear hub spacing.

Get the Hyperglide. You'll be amazed how much better it shifts than with the Regina. I replaced my Reginas with Hyperglide 6-7 and Ultrglide 5s.
