DA 7900 compatability

A guy told me that if you use a DA 7900 shifter you gotta use a DA 7900 RDer. Is this right? Does it apply to the downtube shifters. If true are there any other things I should know as I consider the purchase of Shimano 10 speed downtube shifters

The 7900 rear derailleur is cross-compatible with Shimano's other 10-speed road groups. Ditto for their 10-speed downtube and bar-end shifters.
