Threadless Headset Top Cap Bolt Sizes
Hey all - working on a build where the fork's star nut is set just deeper than the bolt that came with the headset is long. I am looking for a replacement, about 50mm long, but can anyone tell me the standard thread size and pitch that the star nut accepts?
Cheers, D |
I know mine's an M6 bolt, same as most other things.

50mm means the nut was set WAY too deep. It only needs to be ~ 10-15mm below the top of the steerer. |
Why not just take your too short one along with you to Home Depot or the hardware store and find one that matches?

Or just set a new star nut?

Really the length and the star nut's set depth is irrelevant for my inquiry, I am just looking for the thread size and pitch of the top cap bolt so that when I do go the the hardware shop I don't have to take the whole fork in and strip the threads trying 15 different bolts. I appreciate replies that address this - cheers! |
All the top cap bolts I've ever worked with are M6x1.0. You should have no problems finding this size in the appropriate length.

Yes I agree the nut was set deeply - I inherited the fork with it already set here - didn't really want to fill the tube up with star nuts in case it ever needs to get cut down again and adds unnecessary weight or try to get the existing one out or frankly be bothered by it if I can just get a little longer bolt.

.... set a new one at the correct depth. It's probably cheaper and easier than driving to the hardware store to go bolt hunting.
