Anyone know where to get a Peugeot handlebar mount for this?

Was it the PO who did that to the stem (I'm assuming you did not do this!)??? Certainly one of the last places to risk drilling a hole into on a Peugeot, as that might be one of those French stems (CTA?) that are known to be on the fragile side.....

Why was it done anyway?? I thought it was to mount that headlight, but it looks like it wasn't.

Clamp bolt was missing and at the time I knew nothing about Peugeot and little about bikes in general so I took the advice of the local hardware store. big mistake there considering it waited a few months until i was out riding to snap off. Expensive lesson but learned all the same.

If you drilled through the bars, you should replace them as well as you've weakened them at the point of most stress.

if that hole goes into the handlebars, you need to get new bars too.

I was thinking I would probably replace the bars anyway so no real loss there and my choices were tapping or replacing when I took it to the LBS so back to square one I suppose.

Next problem you run across on that Peugeot, be sure to check with the forum before you start drilling or other stuff that cannot be reversed. You have to realize that these bikes were made with close to minimum amount of materials to keep the weight down so doing stuff like this will usually weaken the part enough that it terminally damages them.
Glad it didn't break on the road on you or you might not be around to tell us about it.
eBay is a good source for older parts for your Peugeot If you have calipers, check what the neck diameter (in mm) is on the stem so you get the correct one as they come in different diameters. The guys in the Classic and Vintage Forum will also have most of the information you will need to find the correct stem and handlebar.

I took apart my vintage Peugeot UO8 about a week ago and saved the handlebar and stem.

If you can't find one locally (which seems unlikely - those vintage Peugeots are all over the place), let me know, and I'd be willing to part with it. Shipping would be from The Netherlands though (taking 4-6 days), so maybe not an ideal solution for you.

I can be reached at p*e*t*e*r*[modified-a]zeilt.nl if you need more information (diameters, pictures).

delete the asterisks so you end up with my first name, and insert the @ in the proper spot.

Good luck,

Peter.

(Edit: fietsbob, do I sense a Dutch heritage in your nick? LOL)

I think that's a late enough model that the stem (steering post clamp) and handlebars may not be the French 22mm and 25mm sizes, but measure before you buy.

Thanks for the offer dinges although I am going to try to go with a more local solution. I will be going to the used bike center (not the one that told me to tap) on my next day off to get the tube measured and go from there probably on Craigslist then Ebay.

Or, instead of the local hardware store, you could've tried the local bicycle store.
