Would this Shimano/Campy drivetrain combo work?
Shifters - Campy 8 speed bar end shifters
Cassette - Custom 7+1 Shimano (an 8 speed 12-27 custom combo of cogs and spacers from various 7-speed Shimano cassettes)
Rear mech - Campy Record 8 speed.
Chain - erm, probably 6-7-8 speed Sram
As the spacing (5mm) of 7 speed Shimano and 8 speed Campy is the same, will this set up work?
This seems to be the cheapest way of getting the 8-speed gearing I want for my TT bike.
I absolutely am not bothered about mixing Shimano and Campy items on one bike. What I am interested in is whether this would work and index well.
Thanks in advance

Yes, I believe that will work, but I've never had the parts to try, as long as the cogs and spacers you have actually do stack up to a 5mm cog to cog spacing.

Are you using HG cogs w/spacers? They're narrower (cogs, not overall spacing) than some of the earlier 7s cogs.
Early (90's) attempts to do this with some Shimano setups supposedly were less than satisfactory.
The HG cogs should be the ticket, as they're only 0.05mm different thickness than Campy 8s cogs.

Ergo + HG = joy.
...Just noticed you're talking about bar-ends. Can't imagine why it wouldn't work. If the levers are countersprung, you're prolly in for even nicer shifting again.

Thanks all for the advice.
The likely bar end shifters will be standard DT Campy 8-speed shifters, mounted on Jagwire bar end shifter pods.
I will put it together and report back.
All cassette cogs are HG.
Cheers
Simon
