Brand new tiagra shifter won't shift

I just got my bike last night and did most of the assembly to turn it into a bike. Then today I went and began to tune it. I got the front derailer and shifter tuned, brakes tuned, everything was ***** dorry.

Then I went to tune the rear and the Tiagra shifter won't shift. I mean this thing came out of the box last night. Is there anything I might be doing wrong? The needle is all the way on the right and won't shift at all. When I swing the metal shifter I get a tiny hint of a tug, but hardly anything.

I'm pretty frustrated as I just dropped 700$ on this bike and it's not working....

Bring it back to the LBS? Or did you buy online. Your are ****ed.

OK it's not that bad. It's likely some sort of cable adjustment with the derailleur that is not done right. See www.bicycletutor.com for videos.

Take it back to the shop and let them look at it. Why did you need to do some assembly?

Well had I gotten it from an LBS I would not have had to do the assembly and my shifter wouldn't be ****ed. I got it from bikes direct. I am happy with the quality of everything else on the bike. The shifter is a Tiagra, a shimano component. The rear de-railer is a shimano 105.

The shifter will not shift at all. The needle is stuck on the far left side of the shifter and won't move. Moving the shift levers had no effect on the shifter cable tension. I am thinking that the shifter is DOA, which means I gotta contact bikes direct and see how ****ed I am.

So responses pertaining to mechanical aspects of my problem would be preferable to "Well if you bought this at the LBS this wouldn't be a problem" as I am quite aware of that already.

I just dropped 700$ on a Vent Noir and I am really wanting to have a functional bike.

The cable came out of the mechanism inside the shifter and jammed the thing that makes it shift. There is a little wheel thing inside with a track which the cable goes into and the cylinder at the end locks into. This is rotated by the shift levers. It had rotated all the way to the left, then the cable hammed the cylinder so it would not turn allowing the cable to be installed.

It took some finagling to get it in but now it is working well.
