Hey hey,
I'm wrenching on a beater SS I picked up today for $5. I've got a stuck, rusted together middle/outer chainring bolt -- the kind that threads into the nut on the inside of the spider (double-stack bolts here). I've doused it with penetrating oil and all that, but it just spins instead of unscrews. There's that slot in the back, of course. Holding it with a flathead screwdriver isnt' helping. There isn't some special tool for this, is there? I've always used a screwdriver, just never had one so tightly stuck. update-- never mind, spoke too soon. got the bolt out. |
I had one that wouldn't budge I think it was cross threaded at the factory since the cranks were new. I had to drill it out.

Yes there is a tool, go to a lbs, 'bout 5-7$.

There is a tool for it that might help you get more leverage. May end up drilling it out, use a drill bit that's slightly smaller than the bolt hole in the chainring. Or, if you are exceptionally talented with a Dremel tool, use a cutoff wheel to cut the fange from the chainring bolt and punch it through.
