I just bought a SRAM powerglide II what tools do i need?
 

I just orderd an SRAM powerglide II cassette and im wondering if there are any tools i *need* to do the job of replacing it. Ive replaced other cassettes without the use of any of htose park tools which in my opinion are overpriced. But does SRAM have some special system and i need a special tool or anything like that? Any thing i need to be aware of before tackling the job? Thankyou

I want to know what kind of other cassettes you've replaced without using any special tools.

And most interesting, how? I can see someone using an old chain and Vise Grips instead of a chain whip, but the spline tool? Bang on the splines with a screwdriver and hammer? Ouch!

i am not really sure you understood what i said correctly. By no special tools i mena tools especially for bikes. I have a fairly large array of tools for cars so thats what i use.

Why that's cool, man. Good for you. You still haven't said what kind of cassettes you've removed and you haven't said how you remove them without the peculiar-to-bikes splined lockring socket.

I'd imagine that any hub that will fit a PowerGlide II cassette is going to require a spline-tool of some kind to remove the old cassette as well as another (or possibly the same, depending) to install the new one. And is a $5 cassette/freewheel tool or $10 lockring tool really all that overpriced?

The three tools you need to remove and instal a cassett are a cassett lock ring tool, a chain whip tool and a crescent wrench, the bigger the better. I would advise you to get some detailed instruction from books or otherwise on the removal of cassetts, because they are usually put on very tight and are of such a nature as to be easily damaged if you have to experiment in which direction to turn things. Good luck. I think you were bragging when you said that you had replaced others before. My experience is that the cassett lock ring tool is standard. This is certainly different than the old free wheel cogs. Every free wheel I encountered seemed to require a different tool.

I dont understand why people think i am bragging, that was not hte intent. I must have worded that wrong, im just curious if there is any tool just for SRAM cassettes, dont know why all of this came up.

The Park Tool FR-5/FR-5G should work for SRAM as well as Shimano.
