Fork With Mid-Blade Rack Eyelets?

I am looking for a lighter weight, sturdy fork to use for touring. I recently goofed and put a hole in the fork on my touring bike. After shopping around, I purchased a Surly Cross fork as a replacement, but when I pulled the old one off, it made the new Surly fork feel like a boat anchor. The old one weighs in at 1.8 pounds; the Surly, at 3 pounds.

My LBS, source of the Surly, says it can't find any other fork with rack eyelets that's a 700C. I haven't had luck on the internet either. Any ideas? I am bridling at putting this boat anchor on in place of the old fork.

Which surly fork did you get?

LHT and crosscheck fork should only be 2.2~2.3lbs, or 1kg.

was your older fork made from carbon fiber? because most steel forks don't get any lighter than 1kg

I rather thought this fork would be in the 2 to 2.5 lb ballpark, too. I probably had that idea from the LBS reading the catalog or perhaps my on-line shopping. Yet, when I weigh the Surly at home, it's much closer to 3 lbs.

I'm baffled that the Surly is listed as under 1000 grams in the Universal Cycles catalog. I just looked in the steerer tube to see whether there might by something heavy stuck in there!

(My scale may be off, but I don't think it's off much if at all. And, it's unlikely it would weigh the original "light" and the Surly "heavy.")

The original is not lugged and is made from large diameter steel tubing. The manufacturer's mark on the original may once have been on the dropout, but wear has made it unreadable.

I thought I was good at using the internet to find things, but I guess not.

I was all ready to find something wrong with all of these, because I was sure I looked at everything. But, the Tange (link 3) looks good. The Pake C'Muter (link 2) might also work. So, thanks!

Any idea about how heavy the Pake is? I need canti mounts, too.
