Noobie in the house !! I dont understand bicycle tire and tube sizes

I just bought a new hybrid bicycle and i already have a flat. Here is the information on the side of the tire:

700 x 38C......28 x 1 5/8 x 1 1/2....Kenda kourier.....40-622

Ive looked on the internet and found tires that say 700 x 38c, but they dont say that they are 28 x 1 5/8 blah blah blah.

How do I know when Ive found an exact match? Also on the tube for this, do I just use a standard hybrid 28" tube?

it's just metric / standard, go to your local LBS and they will help you out.

700 x 38 tire
Tube with Presta or Schrader valve stem.

I believe you have a 700 x 38C. That means 700 mm overall diameter and a cross-section of 38 mm. The C is the most common road rim standard. The 28 x 1 5/8 is the same size in inches instead of mm. 622 is the rim bead seat diameter (without tire).

Why do you need a new tire? Does it have a large puncture hole? If not you can replace the inner tube and probably patch the tube and reuse it.

bikeboy9317 11-03-10 08:37 PM

honestly thats a good question.....i rode to work one day with no prob. At the end of the day, the tire was flat. Aired it up and made it home. Examined the tire thoroughly and cant find any damage what so ever. So I guess I could just get a new tube.

Are tubes standard size? Like I just need to find a 28" hybrid tube and Im good to go?

Bezalel 11-03-10 08:41 PM

700c, 28", and ERTRO 622 all mean the same thing there are just 3 different ways of saying it. Tubes aren't made for a specific size tire they are made for a range of tires (they are just a balloon the fills the tire), and will be labeled for the smallest and largest size tire. Yours will probably use a 700c x 35-43 tube.

bikeboy9317 11-03-10 08:42 PM

dumb question......the tubes on the amazon link are 20" tubes, but they also say 700 x 38c. Will that fit my 28" bike tire?

Al1943 11-03-10 08:43 PM

You need a 700 tube that will expand up to 38 mm. There is usually a size range like 700 x 32 - 38.
Also get a patch kit and learn how to find the hole and patch it.
There is plenty of tube patching information available on the net.

I'm sure that is only a default image, that tube will fit like a glove with your tires.

It's good that this tire has it's size listed in the three different systems of sizing nomenclature. Good now that you have a better understanding of tire sizing.
I had ridden 700c tires since the early '90s but had never heard of 622 until a few years ago and had no idea what a 28" tire was until just a few months ago. Where you live has a lot to do with how you refer to tire sizes. I have never heard anyone in the Midwest US refer to 28" tires - commonly referred to as 700 around here.

poor choice of images for that tube listing. confusing.
Curious to know where you live?

ok you have nearly 7,000 posts and you are saying the 700 is millimeters? Please tell me you meant Centimeters! or maybe that is one small bike no wonder he is having trouble finding a tube :P

If you were looking for a 700cm tire you'd have a really hard time, 400cm seems to be the biggest availible.

I meant what I said, 700 millimeters. 700 cm = 275.6 inches or 23 feet. So who's got the laughing face now?

Hint... the C doesn't stand for centimeters. Also, 700 is just a rough estimate. It depends on what size your tire is. Hence the switch to ETRO (622). 28" seems to be a German thing.

Your gonna love this. The new mountain bike wheels and tires are called 29ers. Still 700c or 622 standard.
