Raleigh 26 tpi BB question
Hello all,
I was wondering if any of you have experience using threadless bottom brackets with the older Raleigh 26 tpi bottom bracket shells (mine is 71mm). Sheldon Brown's site says that the threadless BB from Velo Orange works and their site confirms that as well. What I'm wondering is, can I use something like this instead to save some money? I'd rather avoid retapping the shell or anything else time-consuming if I can avoid it. It seems like a threadless BB is the easy way to go. |
It will not fit. Your BB is 71 and it make for 68 MM. you be better off with the one from Velo Orange.

Plus, I think the edge of the BB shell needs to be chamferred to accept the bevel on the BB. Takes a special tool. Otherwise it tends to wobble and loosen up. I looked at one of these as a replacement for my Raleigh 20 BB. The solution I used was to just grind a few rows of threading off a standard UN54 BB, leaving only 3 intact rows on each end. Then it threads in nicely. I had to face the BB shell by 3 mm though, to get the width to fit. All done with a file and a steady hand.

Check with Phil Wood Co. they may make mounting rings in the right size.
as they don't use the edge of the shell the width difference is also not an issue. |
I'm not certain what your priority is here, whether
to install a sealed bottom bracket cartridge or to maintain your Raleigh BB with minimal investment? I just converted a 70's Super Course from cottered steel to alloy cotterless by swapping out the axle with a 5 series Sugino that was lying around the Bicycle Kitchen and using the existing cups. Worked out pretty well, but I admittedly have access to a lot more miscellaneous junked parts than the average person. I've never used a threadless BB, so will not presume to offer advice in that regard. When I was internet shopping the alternatives for the Super Course project, I saw somewhere Raleigh threaded mounting rings for sealed BB -- might have been Phil Wood, might have been Velo orange on the Harris Cyclery website. Check and see what they (Harris) have available on the page they devote to BB stuff. Mike Larmer |
Niagara does not give any information on that BB. I vote form the V.O. $60 is not alot for a decent BB esp on like this. it will not however work with Campi cranks
