Bottom Bracket Replacement
 

I have a 13 y/o Diamondback hyrbrid that the BB separated on me my almost near the house.
I was able to get the chain on the smallest ring and get home.
I would like to replace this as I like the bike but don't know that BB to buy or what special tools I would need. Be gentle with me. I don't want to put a lot of money in this bike and
its the only one I have. All assistance appreciated

identify what type of crank/bb system you have. start here http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help

There's two places where you'll be spending money on this repair.

1) Labour to remove and install a bottom bracket/crank. A shop will charge you anywhere from $20-$30. If there is a bike coop, that lends out tool and expertise expect this to be maybe $10.
2) Parts cost, is going to be approximately $15-$30 i'm guessing it'll be a standard square taper bottom bracket.

It's difficult for me to understand exactly what you mean by
" BB separated on me" as this could refer to a number of
different things coming apart at a number of different junctions.

Some of these can lead to damage either to the crank arms
or the cups/bearings or even the BB threading which can
make the job more $ intensive. If there is a bicycle coop
near you, I'd go there first. At the one here in Sacramento
we basically diagnose this stuff for free (do it yourself repair
costs some money).

If you have the equipment to post some pictures of exactly
where and how it separated, we could possibly give you
a better answer. Or possibly not.

I got my bike back to day and it only cost me $45. I was only charged for the sealed Shimano BB.
I had asked about the old one and was told the internal cups were full of individual ball bearing,
and a cup inside that held them in place broke. Old style tools were needed to remove the cups.
I was told I was lucky as the inside threads were not stripped and everything came out clean.
At this point the only thing that matters now is that I’m back on the road, the LBS gave me a great deal, and this riders on this forum are great for providing assistance when its needed
