Disc rim with V-brakes?

I'm looking at these wheels here and wondering whether I should dare get them if I wanted to use V-brakes anyway:

Some wheels with disc hubs have rims that are spec'ed for both V-brakes and disc. Most aren't, you better make sure that rim can take V-brakes or the rim can fail catastrophically on you. Email Niagara or Redline (seattle cycle supply)

That rim appears to lack a brake track. You're looking at fail.

There are a number of rims marketed that use rim brake rims with disc hubs making the conversion easy later. You need to check these XCE500 rims to be shure the have a braking surface. If so, they should be fine with V brakes.

Catastrophic? Fail? Are you implying that if the rims are made for discs that they'd crack if a V-brake was used? The question is not so much, would I get away with using V-brakes on that particular wheel but I mean, say you found any wheel you liked but had a rim specifically for disc brakes, would it be possible to just sand the paint off the sides of the rim to use it with V-brakes. Or, are they structurally weak enough to break if you do use V-brakes?

What makes everyone think the rim is disc only anyways? It almost looks like there's a wear indicator on the 'brake track'. The hub is disc doesn't mean the rim necessarily has to be disc specific. Those specific alex rims aren't listed on their website, but maybe someone can do a more thorough 2 minute googling for information.

There are wheels built that do both. Sanding a rim to convert it is destined to fail though. There are enough rims out there that can do both so why not buy the right stuff instead of taking such a risk? Contact the seller to find out if the rim has a brake surface. If not, you would be hard pressed to find anyone knowledgeable that would recommend modifying it the way you are asking given the litigious society in which we live.

I agree with Operator the text says nothing about the rim not being 'rim brake' compatible. it does not appear to have a machined braking surface but does not have a profile found on dice only rims.

your best bet is always to check with seller or manufacturerer. that does seem like a good price for a Dynamo wheel

Just to clarify, some rims are "disc specific" meaning they don't have a brake track. On such a rim, the pads of a rim brake wouldn't have enough surface to contact (or it would be a weird curved/angled surface) and the pads would just jam into the spokes.

Look at this rim to see what I mean: https://www.ykkbikes.com/files/zoom_rimDelDisc26.jpg (I hope the link works, I was too lazy to actually post the picture.)

I can't tell from the picture whether the rim you're looking at has a brake track or not.

This appears to be a dis specific since it doesn't list "disc and rim brake compatible" among it's attributes. Only a call or email to the seller can tell you for sure. Just to be clear. If it is a disc specific rim, you would be ill advised to use the wheel with rim brakes.

Potentially, depending on the design of the specific rim. Most V-brake rims brake tracks are thicker material than the rest of the rim. No brake track = probably the rim is the same thickness everywhere.

That thickness is where the wear indicator comes from.

Oh well, it was an idea I suppose. The only other built wheel I could find with a dynamo hub I might like is one from bikexperts dot com in Germany. The total with shipping would be at least $180 then the front and back lights from Busch and Muller would be over $120 for sure even without shipping so you're talking at least $300. Sheesh, I think I'll just use batteries for my old Cateye.

If you look up the rim maker's web sites a lot of them include cross section diagrams of their rims. Some of the disc specific rims use a totall different extrusion than the rim brake rims. They tend to have thin sides that curve in. So sanding off paint isn't an option since those rims are thin and curved so the pads won't rub on them correctly. Also the walls are much too thin on these rims to withstand typical brake pad abrasion wear over time. So yeah, they would fail after a short time in use due to this wear. This applies to DISC SPECIFIC rims. The other rims that are clearly made from extrusions that use the thicker flat sides are seldom or never labeled as "Disc Specific" unless they use the same extrusion but don't machine the brake tracks. Such rims can have a nasty seam at the joint. But technically THOSE rims could be used for rim braking if any seam protrusion was filed off first so it didn't hang up the pad.

In any event getting back to THIS wheel from the OP. First off the picture when enlarged looks like it has a proper brake track on it. Second it is a 700c rim. How many disc only 700c's do we see out there? Precious few. And I know I have never seen any myself. So I'd say the chances are excellent that this rim is rim brake compatible. In fact all the pictures I can find of them support this.

Both Amazon and AEBike carry dynamo hub wheels with rim brake compatible rims. AEBike has the best prices. The wheels are Handspun built which is a part of QBP. Not as cheap as the Redline wheel though.

BTW below is a listing for the XCE500 rim by itself and there is no indication that it is a disc only rim. Not all rim brake rims have machined sidewalls. In fact until recently such machining was unusual. I have a couple of bikes with unmachined rim brake rims, both Mavic and Matrix rims.

Thanks for posting the link. It's interesting. Although I have to admit I'm dissapointed it's with a Mavic rim (some people complain they crack) and 32 spoke hubs instead of 36.

Ah well, I still have some time to make decisions.
