Chainring bolt tightening

I am having difficulty getting my chainring bolts tight and was unable to remove them without drilling out the backside of two of them. I assume they should be snug and tightenable. Is there a trick or a tool available? Before I drilled them out, I tried to grab them with a pair of vise grips, but that evenutally became a fruitless effort.

Thanks for your advice

Park makes 2 different types of chainring bolt tools. 1 is angled while the other is basically just like a screwdriver. Both feature a little "tip" that extends into the chainring bolt. When you reinstall the chainring bolts, it helps to put a little grease on the threads. Keeps them from seizing up. Just get them as tight as you can by hand. I've never had one loosen up or back out on its own.

When you try to undo a tight one, make sure you are rotating the allen key away from the teeth. I rotated towards the teeth once, but never again unless you want a lesson in finger anatomy.

I'll bet you we have exactly the same scar on the same finger...

That’s why T handle allens were invented

Just the other day I was changing my chainrings on my fixie and used a dime to hold the backside of the bolt as I unscrewed the other side.
