Trying to find a cheap chainstay mounted chain tensioner
Hey all
I'm looking for my chain tensioner options for a tall bike I'm building. Sheldon Brown's site has a picture of this type of tensioner, but I can only find ones that mount to the derailleur hanger.
Thanks for any help you can lend,
Luke

If I may - any reason why you're going this route? If your going to run a tensioner, it would be more ideal to run one that pushes the chain upward, instead of pulling downward as depicted in the picture.
This offers more chain wrap around the sprocket, thus reducing the potential for slippage.
That said, if you still want to go this route, a quick google search revealed this:

Cheap .. old rear dérailleurs work .. limit screws can get screwed together
The hanger is there
Or put a track dropout in the frame and be done with it.

First of all I want to thank everyone for the help.
The way you described would be the best case scenario. That's how my current tall bike is set up. I would be absolutely THRILLED to find a chain tensioner that pushed the chain IN instead of out. The photo I picked was used just because I believe I will need one that is mounted to the chainstay.
I couldn't find a way to mount the derailleur upside down for the new chainline (parallel to the stop tubes in the rear triangle, not the bottom, see pic below). As for the track frame, I found with my first tall bike that a chain tensioner not only keeps the chain tight, it also helps the keep the chain from swaying side to side.
If you skip to 1:30 in this video you can see my chain setup, which is how I plan on doing my next one

I TIG weld my steel, I don't have access to an oxy/fuel setup. Attaching a mount to the chainstay is definitely a possibility, but the less I have to weld on the rear triangle the happier I am.

Also, I was hoping to mount that style upside down on the chainstay because with the chain being almost parallel to the seatstay it would be able to push it up instead of down!

Chain line runs parallel to the seatstay, not the chainstay. I don't believe a derailleur mounted tensioner will have the right swing to achieve proper tensioning on the chain. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not a bicycle genius, that's why I'm looking for help here.

perhaps you can post a picture of the setup you're working with. I see what you're saying about the chainstay issue.
I could only use this configuration by using a half-link as well, or else the chain was too loose and ran into the same issue.

for those not wanting to watch the video, it's a tall bike.
Have you considered a ghost chainring? There is a reason that chain stay mounted tensioners aren't to prevalent. They simply don't work that well.

No, actually I haven't thought of using a ghost chainring. They just float right? I'm afraid with the longer chain that would cause issues. Most of the reason I want one is to guide the chain, but I also need a method for tensioning too... I might just have to one off something.
Also I'm afraid it would spread the chain too wide near the rear triangle and cause the chain to rub on the seatstay, which is a problem I had before I put the hacked chain tensioner that I have on now

It's kind of hidden behind her foot, but it's there. It might work, it might not.

Tall Bike , just making it is already needing welding, adding an Idler wheel is just adding another fitting
looking normal is already a low priority.
one of my friend's fathers put in a second 3 speed hub chain went up to it then down to the wheel
Hub on top of the seatstays. had a second sprocket instead of spokes , 2 chains.
just mounted on a second dropout slot sort of thing.. up top.
You can get the chain closer w/o an idler with a half link. heck by now there are chains made entirely of 1/2 links..
1/2 link is a bent side plate, its an outside link on one end, with the pin,
an inside link with the chain roller on the other.
