What bearings do I need for my 1970s Raleigh wheel??

OK guys so just doing some work on my Raleigh Magnum.

Greasing wheels up and BOOOOOM, out pops the little sucker and rolls away amongst the crap in my garage.

What size do I need for this wheel, it's the original wheel, I have measured it at about 6.3 mm????

Look forward to an answer..

Thats 1/4" balls in the bicyle universe. You'll probably need 9 per side. Buy a bag of 100 grade25 and you'll be set for a while. Go ahead and replace all of them in your hub.

Unless you're working on a French bike, almost everything that's quoted as a metric size is really just a converted Imperial measurement. But we're nuts, anyway.

28.6mm is really just 1 1/8"
31.8mm is 1 1/4"
34.9mm = 1 3/8"

It's just the way we Ameicans fool the rest of the world into thinking we've adopted the Metric system. The best ones are the old Sugino 171mm cranksets (that's really 6 3/4").

Most cup-and-cone front hubs use 3/16" bearing balls and most commonly 10 per side although some of the newer shimano hubs use 11 per side.

Most rear hubs use 1/4" bearing balls, 9 per side.

Campy hubs use 5/32" bearing balls both front and rear.

As Ex Pres recommended, buy a bag of 100 Grade 25 balls of each size and be set for years. And do change all of the bearings in the hubs when you overhaul them.
