142+ Freewheel Issue

:madman: Ok here is my issue, I have a 2011 Epic EVO R 29er with Industry Nine wheels. The I9s have their 142+ adapter installed. When I back pedal the crank the chain drops onto the chain stay and the freewheel does not roll backwards....... However, when I install the wheels on my hardtail Stumpjumer the freewheel works correctly (standard skewer).

Anyone got an idea what the fix could be?

Thanks

Might not be the freehub, but you need to check. First spin the wheel forward and watch to see if the top loop sags. That means the wheel is pushing chain forward, and you need to isolate the cause. Remove the wheel and see if the cassette spins freely. Now mount it, but do not loop the chain over it (if necessary, mirror the wheel), close the QR and see if the cassette still spins freely.

If not, your dropouts may not be parallel and the frame is bowing the axle binding the freehub slightly.

If the hub checks out OK, look elsewhere for your problem. It might be a chain suck type issue, ie. either a dirty chain, or worn chainrings.

have the hubs broken in yet? are you servicing the hubs?

Given that the wheel works properly on the OP's Stumpjumper, it seems the hub and freehub body are ok.

I'd look closely at the clearance between the cogs or lockring and the drive side chainstay and dropout. Something must be rubbing or interfering there or elsewhere on the frame.
