FD Cable Routing Question on Centurion Ironman
 

I determined why the FD cable broke on my wife's bike (see this thread). The cable was rubbing against part of the FD.

This is how I had routed it last time:

I had assumed that that "knob" was to keep the cable under the bolt.

So my question is: should it be routed like this instead (tighter, of course)?

You notice how the cable sits in the groove. That groove is there to help keep the cable from deforming (flat) as the bolt get tight. The earlier picture looked like you had the cable not lined up with the groove. Other than some dirt -- the cable routing looks good.

Yeah, I thought someone would notice the dirt. The camera adds 10 lbs of dirt.

Here it is installed and cleaned up a bit. I clipped the end of the cable a little shorter than I intended.

IF the cable doesn't go up over the 'nub', then it doesn't pull quite enough - and can rub where it shouldn't.

Your "new" cable routing (outside of the nub) is correct. For friction shifting (downtube or barend) it doesn't really matter but for indexing it is essential the cable be routed outside and over the nub.

Looks very nice. I know your wife will be much happier with a cleaner bike that works better. She should notice that the front derailleur works better than before.
